AL DUBOIS

Al Dubois knew he was the perfect host for ‘Bumper Stumpers’ the moment he auditioned

“Bumper Stumpers” just wouldn’t have been the same without host Al Dubois.

And Dubois knew it from the moment he auditioned.

“I went to (producer Dan Enright) and said, ‘Dan, you’ve got to hire me. I can do this for you. This is my show, Dan!’” recalls Dubois.

His confidence paid off. He landed the role and went on to host the game show that had contestants unscrambling vanity license plates from 1987 – 1990.

“Al Dubois was an excellent host,” says “Bumper Stumpers” creator Wink Martindale.

“He was kind of like the boy next door. A personality, a sense of humour that I personally connected to, and I knew the viewer would as well,” adds producer Doug Gahm.

Steven Page was also a huge fan of Dubois. The former “Barenaked Ladies” member appeared on the show as a university student in his first TV appearance in 1988.

“Al, we liked him from afar because he was smooth. But he also was not a traditional game show host. He didn’t have that overly slick huckster feel to him,” says Page.

The show was a hit with viewers for its relatability and challenging puzzles.

“I would not have made it past the first round,” admits Dubois with a laugh.

The nostalgia for “Bumper Stumpers” is still going strong today.

As well as a game show host, Dubois was also a weatherman for both Global TV and The Weather Network.
