Good clean family fun made ‘Second Honeymoon’ a success  

How well do kids know their parents? Hopefully well enough to send them on a romantic “Second Honeymoon.”

Created and produced by legendary game show host Wink Martindale and Jerry Gilden, “Second Honeymoon” (or 2nd Honeymoon) was similar in format to “The Newlywed Game” but had the novel element of adding kids.

Hosted by Wayne Cox, who also hosted the Canadian hit TV game show “Talk About,” “Second Honeymoon” featured three married couples and their children competing against each other.

The kids were asked questions about their moms and dads and the parents were then asked the same questions. If their answers were the same, the families would earn points. In the third round, the children teamed up with their mother to see how well they both knew their father/husband. The family with the most points at the end of the show earned the honeymoon.

“It was just one of those games that caught on for obvious reasons,” says Martindale. “It was clean, it involved the family, other families watching on television could relate to it. It was just a perfect show and it’s still seen in some areas of the country to this day.”

Martindale credits Cox for making “Second Honeymoon” such a success. 

“He was so good. He was such a good interviewer,” recalls Martindale.

The show may have been a success but it didn’t stop Mental Floss from naming it one of the most awkward Canadian game shows.
